Why a fast site wins customers and rankings
Speed is not a vanity number. When a page is slow, people leave before they ever read what you do — and you never even see them in your stats. A faster site keeps more of the visitors you already paid to attract, so more of them call, fill out a form, or book.
It also matters to Google. Google uses real-world speed and stability as one of the signals it weighs when deciding which sites to show. That means the same work that makes your site feel snappy to a human also helps you show up in search. You get both from one fix, which is why this is the heart of good local SEO for North Shore businesses — not a separate add-on.
The honest version: we can't promise a #1 ranking, and nobody reputable can. What we can do is remove the technical reasons Google and your customers have to pass you by.
The three Core Web Vitals, in plain English
Google grades every page on three things. Strip away the acronyms and they're simple to understand:
- LCP — how fast the main thing loads. When someone lands on your page, how long until the biggest piece of content — usually your headline or hero image — actually shows up? If they're staring at a blank or half-built screen, that's a slow LCP. The goal is for the page to look ready almost immediately.
- CLS — how much the page jumps around. You've felt this: you go to tap a button and the page shifts, so you tap an ad or the wrong link instead. That's layout shift. It happens when images, fonts, or banners load late and shove everything else down. A stable page doesn't move under your visitor's thumb.
- INP — how quickly the page responds to you. When someone taps a menu, a button, or a form field, does it react right away, or is there an awkward lag? INP measures that responsiveness. A good score means the site feels alive and reacts the instant someone interacts with it.
Loading fast, holding still, and responding instantly. That's the whole game, and it's exactly what a frustrated visitor is judging you on without thinking about it.
How we actually fix it
We don't guess. We measure your site the way Google does, find what's dragging it down, fix the real causes, and then re-measure to prove it worked.
- Measure first. We test your live pages and pull your real-world numbers for loading, layout shift, and responsiveness — on mobile, where most of your customers actually are.
- Find the real culprits. Slow sites are usually slow for a few specific reasons: huge uncompressed images, too many plugins or scripts, no caching, and fonts that load awkwardly. We pinpoint which ones apply to you.
- Fix the foundation. We compress and properly size images, cut dead weight, set up caching, and clean up the code so the most important content loads first and nothing jumps around.
- Re-test and prove it. We re-run the numbers so you can see the before and after. The target we build to is a Lighthouse score of 95+ and sub-1.5s load times.
This is also the kind of work that's hard to bolt on later, which is why we bake it into every site we design from the start rather than patching it after launch.
WordPress speed optimization specifics
Most local-business sites run on WordPress, and most slow WordPress sites are slow for the same handful of reasons. WordPress website speed optimization usually comes down to four things:
- Images. The single biggest cause of slow pages. Photos uploaded straight from a phone or camera are often ten times larger than they need to be. We resize them, compress them, and serve modern formats so they look identical but load in a fraction of the time.
- Plugins. Every plugin adds code, and many add code on every single page whether it's used there or not. We audit what's installed, remove what you don't need, and replace heavy plugins with lighter approaches.
- Caching. Without caching, WordPress rebuilds each page from scratch for every visitor. Proper caching saves a finished copy so it's served instantly. This is one of the biggest, fastest wins available.
- Fonts. Custom fonts are a common, sneaky cause of both slow loading and that annoying text-flicker as the page settles. We load them the right way so text appears fast and stays put.
If your current WordPress site is bloated beyond an easy fix, we'll tell you honestly — sometimes a clean rebuild is cheaper than endlessly patching a heavy theme. Either way, you're working with someone who knows the platform under the hood, not just the page builder on top of it.
Why a developer beats a template stack here
Here's the part most agencies won't say out loud: many of them build on heavy drag-and-drop page builders and themes that pile on code you can't see or remove. That's fine for clicking a layout together quickly, but it's exactly what wrecks page speed optimization — and it's very hard to undo once it's baked in.
Because DevWrangler is built by a developer, not a template reseller, we can go into the actual code, cut the bloat, and control how things load. On a WordPress site that means a leaner setup; on a custom-built site it means almost nothing is wasted to begin with. That's a genuine technical advantage, and it shows up directly in your numbers and your visitors' experience.
